In a male dominated field, Robin Bogue, is breaking boundaries and gaining respect as a premier winemaker. Bogue owns and operates William James Cellars in the Santa Maria Valley. She started making wine at home. “It became a hobby that just kinda of went wild,” she says.

Bogue began winning awards for her wines, and there came a point where she says, “it was time to scale down or build up.” She opened William James Cellars in 2003 and now we all get to enjoy her amazing wines. You don’t have to look far to see where Bogue gets her love of wine. “My dad has been in the vineyard industry my entire life and my sister is in distribution, so it’s definitely a family affair,” says Bogue. The name of her winery is also all in the family, William is her father and James is her son.

Bogue started by producing two varietals, Chardonnay and Syrah, and now offers more than a dozen, including Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Dessert Chardonnay and Port. In her years of winemaking, she’s already received several awards for her wine, including 2009 Chardonnay Best of Class, 2007 Grenache Best of Santa Barbara County and Best Red Varietal. And most recently 93 pts by the Wine Enthusiast for Syrah.

Bogue’s favorite wine to produce is Chardonnay. “I love to work with light tropical flavored fruit,” she says. “I use three different yeasts and then combine them right before bottling. We also make a dessert and sparkling Chardonnay as well as stainless steel and neutral oak renditions.” She also loves to work with Sangiovese; she products a Rose and a Port from the grape.

From wine history to wine varietals, a visit to William James Cellars almost always turns into an educational experience. Bogue regularly offers wine workshops that include everything from the “101 of wine tasting” to learning how vineyards were protected during World War II. “I use simple language so that people understand the process of fermentation and how to taste wines,” explains Bogue. She says no matter what the topic of the class, Bogue wants people to learn that wine tasting is about “enjoying one of life’s riches and about the romance of wine in a bottle.”
